Schedule
A typical practice begins with a formal opening ceremony that allows
the students to take a moment to clear their minds of all distractions
to better prepare for class. Next the instructor takes the class
through a variety of warms ups that focus on reducing the risk of
injuries as well as developing skills that will be used for more
advanced techniques. Next basic skills or 'kihon' are covered, such as
basic falling, striking, and weapons skills along with a variety of
other fundamentals. Students are then divided into groups and given a
series of techniques to work on based on the individual student's
level of skill and what is required for their next rank examination.
This portion of class makes up the bulk of the instruction. If time
permits different types of free form practice or Randori is allowed.
Some methods of Randori includes sparring with multiple attackers in a
structured environment, a ground fighting match where both students
attempt to submit the other, or weapon and/or empty handed sparring.
It is important to note that Yoseikan is an expansive martial art with
a multitude of techniques that cover many types of combat. Because of
that diversity it is often challenging for students who expect to work
on the same techniques and skills every workout. We prefer to think
that the variety of the curriculum helps keep the students and
instructors learning for many years without fear of boredom. Students
are encouraged to be patient with themselves and in time the level of
technique they desire will come.
Classes are offered every Tuesday and Thursday between 7:15 and
9:15pm. Students are encouraged to arrive on time for class, so as not
to distract the other students.
